This Cardiologist should have simply suggested that I eat a Big Mac versus his Caesar Salad suggestion.

I am not a doctor, nor am I a nutritionist.  I normally don’t break down the food I eat on a caloric intake basis; nor do I follow the FDA daily nutritional recommendations.  The beauty of eating a Plant Based diet, is the simplicity of the entire affair.  You can essentially eat as many plants that can fit in your belly.  Heart Healthy is a low-fat diet, a correct amount of plant protein, and whole grains.

I avoid fat and I do not eat animals or any by-product of an animal.  I have been down that road and I now know where it leads.  I have had my chest cut open and my heart stopped, all in an effort to supply oxygen to my heart; to essentially circumvent all the fat I stuffed up my arteries with.

The last couple posts I have been getting all worked up on the Big Mac in the hospital situation.  Just when I have made my peace with it; I receive an email this morning from a cardiologist recommending his favorite caesar salad.  This email is from Valley Health, a conglomerate of hospitals in Virginia, that maintains a blog named Healthlink.

“If you like Caesar salad you should love this one! This recipe is based on an original New Orleans recipe I borrowed from my sister-in-law.” Dr. Neal Gaither Cardiologist, The Cardiovascular Group at Selma.

Why Caesar Salad?  Anchioves, eggs, shrimp, oil, parmesan cheese and a couple romaine lettuce leafs to serve as a delivery system.  Come on Doc!  This is hardly a healthy choice for your patients.  In fact, a Big Mac is a better choice in this situation.  He did give some thought to making this healthy however; he expressed that he uses egg product vs. egg (egg product is simply egg removed from shell) and he uses whole wheat croutons, likely contains oil.

I don’t get it.  Is there anyone discussing the benefits of a healthy diet for your heart?  A cardiologist is in the trusted position of guiding his patients through an enormously difficult period both physically and mentally.  When you meet with your cardiologist you weigh on their every word.  But Nutrition is not a skill most Doctor’s have been exposed to.  Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Esselstyn have spent their lives attempting to have nutrition included in the curriculum.

I have said it before and will likely repeat this infinitum; no one has any vested interest in your health other than you.

I weigh 198 pounds and have a tremendous appetite.  I could easily eat 2 heads of romaine lettuce no problem.  My wife could eat two heads of romaine lettuce.  He also has 4 shrimp on the salad which he does not include in his nutritional breakdown.

So, if I ate the whole salad what are the numbers; without Shrimp!

Tasty Tuesday Shrimp Ceasar Salad

  • 3 anchoives
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 fresh lemon
  • 1/4 cup pasteurized egg product (Dr. Gaither uses Better n’Eggs)  THIS IS STILL AN EGG “eggs that are removed from their shells for processing.”
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • Whole wheat croutons
  • Fresh ground pepper to taste
  • 2 heads fresh Romaine lettuce

Nutrition: Servings per recipe: 4, calories: 220, total fat: 21 gm, saturated fat: 4 gm, cholesterol: 9 mg, sodium: 275 mg, protein: 7 gm, carbohydrates: 4 gm
