Each day we are inundated with warnings.  The multitude of daily events that come with lists of dangers & the warning labels associated with them is endless. 

My day starts with a warning in my elevator to keep my body away from the door of the elevator, at the risk of losing body parts.  Also, a large warning sign instructing me to get off the elevator if there is a fire.

I am fortunate to be able to walk to my office, and pedestrians face a gauntlet of death-defying obstacles, from 3000 pd hunks of metal driven by the ever late commuter to falling coconuts; a very real threat in Florida.

As I proceed to my next elevator ride I pay heed to the “wet floor” signs throughout our marble entrance way.  Carefully I find my way to my office, close the door… safe?

Not quite. 

I am aware now, in my office, of the next threat to my security.  The next part of the day is focused on my financial safety.  On any given day, it is cash in, cash out as I earn my living.  Any misstep here at work could have lasting consequences.  Any error could result in losing my source of income and my health insurance; having a vast ripple effect on my overall health. 

Alias, time to return to the safety of my home through the obstacles I had conquered a few hours prior. 

Next set of life threatening events; the gym.  Don’t place your hand here, don’t use if you have high blood pressure, wear proper footwear, never steam alone, wipe off your bodily fluids from the equipment and do not dive headfirst into the shallow end of the pool; and on and on it goes.

Back home, eat, drink, relax.  Last step, my nightly medication to prevent any post op complications; aspirin, cholesterol and blood pressure… forget about reading the warnings on those.  Taking cholesterol medicine can increase your blood pressure so make sure you take your blood pressure medicine.  Warning: worrying about your blood pressure can also increase your blood pressure.  


What is missing for the average Joe & Jane?  

No warnings regarding nutrition.  No warnings about the fuel you used to power your body and mind through the obstacle course.

There are no heads up that the food that is so readily available to you could be causing you bodily harm.  No warnings that your nutrition is likely packed with hundreds of ingredients that you can neither pronounce nor find naturally occurring in nature.  No warnings regarding quantity of ingredients that should be consumed.

All we rely on when it comes to our food is common sense.  Unfortunately that common sense has been completely abandoned.

Does common sense dictate that we drink our daily caloric requirement in sodas and Starbucks?  Does common sense prevail when we consume more calories than we use?  You can’t put more gas in your car than the tank will allow right?  Yet we constantly do just that by getting a larger fuel tank.

The average American takes in over 130 grams of protein a day.  We need 1/3 of that number to thrive.

Where is Common Sense?

We have replaced Common Sense with warning labels.  As a result of years and years of litigation we no longer rely on Common Sense; it has been replaced.  Corporations that produce the goods and services we consume are more concerned with liability than responsibility.

In the absence of a warning label the consumer sees a green light to proceed.

The number one killer of Americans is malnutrition.  With the epidemic of obesity and the chronic diseases associated with it; it is time to reintroduce some old-fashioned Common Sense into our daily nutritional habits.
